The brothers (part 1)

Two brothers, each loved and raised and taught, walked down a road. The road was old and eroded, but only went forward. The brothers walked, and talked, and looked round at the world around them...until finally, they reached a divide.
They looked to one another, and were prepared to decide together which path to take, but an old man, hidden in the shade of a tree next to the divide, walked out and stopped them.
He told the brothers that they must both take a separate route if they wished to go on, or that if they wished to remain as they were, they'd have to turn back.
